Electric Vehicle Charging Points

An electric vehicle can almost double a household’s annual electricity consumption. Planning the charging point together with the solar system turns that load from a cost into a gain.

Charging speed follows the supply phase

On a single-phase supply, charging power is typically limited to 7.4 kW. A three-phase supply allows 11 kW or 22 kW — cutting charging time to as little as a third.

The phase configuration and main fuse rating of your existing supply are checked during the survey. If an upgrade is needed, it is added to the plan.

Why intelligent load management is essential

Vehicle charging is the largest single load in a house. If the oven, air conditioning and charger all run at once, the main fuse can trip. Intelligent load management automatically reduces charging power according to the home’s live consumption.

Used together with a solar system, the same device can run in a “charge from surplus only” mode. The car then charges purely from what your roof produces, drawing nothing from the grid.

How to choose

Supply phase

Single phase 7.4 kW; three phase 11–22 kW.

Where it is used

Home, estate car park or workplace — the need for user authentication differs.

Solar integration

If surplus-only charging is wanted, a compatible model must be chosen.

Cable type

Socket or tethered cable — this decides day-to-day convenience.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charge my car from solar alone?

Yes, with an intelligent charger. The device runs in “charge from surplus only” mode and draws nothing from the grid. It does mean charging only during sunny hours and more slowly; grid support can be enabled when you are in a hurry.

Can a charging point be installed in an estate car park?

Yes, but it requires an owners’ association decision and a check of the common-area electrical infrastructure. If several units are planned, a load-sharing system is installed; otherwise the capacity of the installation is exceeded.

Isn’t charging from a normal socket enough?

It may be enough, but it is slow and not safe. A normal socket is not designed for sustained high current; over hours of charging it heats up and creates a fire risk. A charging unit is both faster and includes residual-current protection.
