Charge Controllers (MPPT and PWM)

The charge controller delivers energy from the panels to the battery at the right voltage and current. It is the single component that most affects battery life — save money here and the battery is finished in two years.

How much difference is there between MPPT and PWM?

A PWM controller matches panel voltage to the battery crudely; the difference is lost as heat. An MPPT controller continuously tracks the panel’s maximum power point and converts the excess into current.

In practice MPPT harvests noticeably more energy, especially in cold and low-light conditions. Except in small, cost-sensitive systems, MPPT is preferred.

The device is set to the battery type

Gel, AGM, flooded and lithium batteries have different charge curves. A battery charged on the wrong profile either never fills completely or is damaged by overcharging.

At installation the controller is configured for the battery type in use and a temperature sensor is connected. For lithium batteries we prefer devices that communicate with the BMS.

How to choose

System size

Panel power and battery voltage determine the current rating required.

Battery type

If lithium is used, choose a device that communicates with the BMS.

Efficiency expectation

MPPT except in the smallest systems; PWM only in very small setups.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy MPPT or PWM?

MPPT is recommended in any system above a few hundred watts. The extra cost is recovered quickly through the additional energy harvested. PWM only makes sense in very small, single-panel setups.

If I have a hybrid inverter, do I still need a charge controller?

No. Most hybrid and off-grid inverters already contain an MPPT charging circuit. A separate controller is used where the battery needs to be charged independently of the inverter.
