The real advantage of solar lighting is not the electricity saved but escaping the cost of running cable. Along a long garden path, a car park or a field entrance, excavation and cable cost more than the luminaire itself.
Where does it genuinely make sense?
Anywhere the grid is distant or excavation is difficult: garden paths, estate perimeter lighting, car parks, field and warehouse entrances, jetties and marinas.
Against that, at a point right next to an existing supply a solar luminaire is usually not economical; a conventional fitting is cheaper and more reliable.
Does it work in winter?
Yes, if correctly sized. The critical points are the short winter day and the loss of battery capacity in the cold. The luminaire is therefore selected for winter conditions, not summer.
Good systems use a motion sensor and stepped brightness: they burn at a low level through the night and rise to full power when movement is detected. This extends both battery life and the hours of operation through the night considerably.
