On-Grid, Off-Grid and Hybrid Inverters

The inverter is the brain of the system. It converts the direct current the panels produce into usable alternating current, and it manages the relationship with the grid, the battery and your loads. In practice the inverter choice determines the system type.

Three types, three different scenarios

An on-grid inverter is connected to the network and has no battery. It is the cheapest and most efficient option, but it shuts down during an outage for safety reasons. If lowering the bill is the only goal, it is the right choice.

An off-grid inverter never connects to the network and runs entirely from the battery. For places without a supply — vineyard houses, allotments, caravans and boats — it is the only option.

A hybrid inverter combines the two: connected to the grid, with a battery as well. It feeds selected circuits during an outage and stores the daytime surplus. It is the most flexible option and the most expensive.

Why the number of MPPTs matters

The MPPT is the circuit that extracts maximum power from the panels. If your roof has surfaces facing different directions — east and west, say — each peaks at a different hour. An inverter with a single MPPT cannot manage both, and output falls.

On multi-surface roofs, therefore, an inverter with two or more MPPT inputs is chosen. The roof surfaces are mapped during the survey and the inverter selected accordingly.

The supply phase limits the system

On a single-phase supply the system size that can be installed is limited. A three-phase supply allows both a larger system and much faster electric vehicle charging.

The phase configuration of your existing supply is checked during the survey; if an upgrade is needed, that application is added to the plan.

Grid situation

No grid: off-grid. Grid with outages: hybrid. Bill reduction only: on-grid.

Number of roof surfaces

Surfaces facing different directions call for an inverter with several MPPT inputs.

Supply phase

Single or three phase — it sets both system size and EV charging speed.

Battery compatibility

If a battery may be added later, choose a hybrid or battery-ready model now.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a hybrid inverter?

If power cuts bother you, or you may add a battery later, yes. If you only want to reduce the bill, an on-grid inverter is cheaper and slightly more efficient. Converting to hybrid later costs more than buying hybrid at the outset.

How long does an inverter last?

Typically 10–15 years; it is usually the first part of the system to be replaced. Manufacturer warranties range from 5 to 10 years, and some brands offer a paid extension.

Where is the inverter mounted?

Somewhere cool, shaded and ventilated. An inverter mounted on a wall in direct sun will throttle its output in summer. Because it can hum, we also avoid positions on the other side of a bedroom wall.
