The battery is the most expensive part of a solar system and the one most often chosen wrongly. The right capacity is not the largest capacity; it is the one that covers your actual night-time consumption.

Lithium or gel?

LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries can safely use 80–90% of their capacity, last 3,000–6,000 cycles and need no maintenance. With gel batteries only about half the capacity is usable and the life is markedly shorter.

The initial outlay is higher for lithium; but once usable capacity and life are taken into account, total cost of ownership usually comes out lower. In caravans and boats the weight difference makes lithium all but mandatory.

How capacity is determined

The right question is not “how many kWh should I buy” but “what do I want to run at night and during an outage”. The capacity needed for a refrigerator, lighting, internet and a few sockets is far smaller than that needed to feed a whole house.

In hybrid systems, therefore, selected circuits are usually separated out: during an outage only the critical lines run from the battery. That reduces the battery cost considerably.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a battery last?

LiFePO4 batteries give 3,000–6,000 cycles — typically over ten years in daily use. Gel batteries last markedly less. Cheap “marine” or “tractor” batteries usually lose their capacity within 18 months to two years in solar systems.

Will I have power during an outage without a battery?

No. Standard grid-connected systems shut down for safety when the grid fails — even with sun on your roof. If you want power during an outage, you need a hybrid inverter and a battery.

Can I add a battery later?

Yes, if your inverter is hybrid or battery-ready. Adding a battery to a system built with an on-grid inverter means replacing the inverter too. If you expect to add storage later, choosing hybrid from the start is more economical.
